Called out by name in a blog that reviews daily items in The News Herald: (the links are my own, not in the original)

"The News Herald Online, has got some issues, which will not be easy to resolve. The page format is unappealing and uninviting. There's not much variety to choose from. Searching the archives is tedious, and the stories, unlinkable; unless I'm doing something wrong. And speaking of links, most will redirect the reader to EmeraldCoast.com, which is a site that has plenty of downfalls of their own.
I wish Tony Simmons, the best of luck, but he's got some work cut out for him."

Hah. People complain to me about Publishers Weekly and Newsarama.com about everything.

But the blogger does raise some valid points, but I think the impediment is mainly due to the monetary pay structure of the PCNH site, which is unavoidable.

My new gig is providing content for the page that doesn't require a password. To that end, I've been doing videos and exclusive stories, building topic-specific archives for ongoing stories, finding multimedia links for entertainment stories (and writing more than a few of those as well), working with high school interns, and trying to get some up-to-date stuff going like RSS feeds, podcasts, and blogs. Some of this won't happen until we undergo a complete redesign, which is being overseen by the EmeraldCoast.com folks, who run the portal. In addition we're lobbying to get permission to post more free stories - breaking news and developing stories, as well as the entire text of certain top local stories. Yeah, the blogger is right. The work's cut out for me.

RSS feeds are a must, and can be easily done; but like you said, it's best to wait until the EC.com do their re-design and then fit in amongst that.

It'd be a great resources if you were to have free content, and videos and audio. You could even mention it in the print edition and get those subscribers coming online to see the Anderson video, tape from the commission meetings, music from bands featured, etc.

And archiving older PCNH stories on the website to provide better context to a developing story would be great.

I talked to John M. once about writing something weekly for the Entertainer on a theme (like the new games column), but he said they don't do that kind of stuff. Oh well...
